Youth Jazz Ensemble

Oct 2023-May 2024 (30 weeks)

The Queens Youth Jazz Ambassador is a 30-weeks long commitment program with instrumental jazz instruction to middle and high school students. Students have the opportunity to enhance their musical education with the finest professional training and performance faculty members.

The students will learn jazz theory, writing, ear training, and jazz standard repertoires and have performance experiences.

Admission and Audition Requirements

We are now recieving applications for the 2023-2024 Middle/ High School Jazz Academy. Please submit your application by September 15th, 2023.

Requirement

  1. Scales: Play chromatic and 3 major scales ( two octaves, major keys chosen by the adjudicators)

  2. Sight-Read: All students will sight-read selected material within their respective sections.

  3. Improvisation: All students will improvise over a blues (concert F, Bb, or Eb) and Rhythm changes (concert Bb) progressions with a rhythm section.

  4. Rhythm Section:

    • Piano and guitar players should be prepared to comp changes for blues and rhythm changes in addition to improvising.

    • Bass player will be expected to walk a bass line and improvising over those chord progressions.

    • Drummers will play time and improvise along with a rhythm section and demonstrate ability with brushes as well as sticks

Eligibility

  • Students must be entering Grades 6-12

  • Instruments: Saxophone (Alto, Tenor, Baritone), Trumpet, Trombone, Guitar, Piano, Bass, Drums.

  • At least 2 years experience on the instrument.
